On a day with a biting windchill of 25-below, was it worth it to bundle up four kids and take them to the annual Martin Luther King Celebration at Powderhorn Park? Unfortunately not, and it really didn’t have much to do with the weather. It was a disappointment to discover upon arriving about halfway through the event that the children’s activities had already wrapped (save the MLK internet scavenger hunt, appropriate only for my oldest). We missed the hoped-for West African drum lessons. And thank goodness we didn’t arrive hungry because the soul food supply was down to the last few crumbs. The community center gym was packed for the live entertainment – certainly uplifting to see – but nary a place to park the kids without getting trampled.
(I had researched this event online thoroughly and found no detailed activity schedule aside from the general runtime of 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Therefore, I (mistakenly) assumed all activities would be ongoing.)
